1. Sweep the edges first

Tiles on the edge have a whole ring of empty space outside the board to use, so they connect the easiest. At the start, run your eyes along all four edges. You'll often clear several pairs in one go.

The top row is packed between them, but they still connect around the outside

2. Look at all four, not just two

Every tile comes in 4 copies. When you spot two that connect, take a quick look at where the other two are. If they're trapped in the middle, it's smart to leave them an easy-to-reach partner on the outside.

3. Don't rush the pair right in front of you

Just because you can clear a pair doesn't mean you should. Clearing a pair opens a path, but it can also leave some other tile with no partner it can reach. When in doubt, clear tiles whose four copies are all close together. That's the safest move.

4. Watch out for crossed pairs

The most common deadlock looks like this: two kinds of tiles sit diagonally, with A at top-left and bottom-right, and B at top-right and bottom-left, all boxed in. Now A can't reach A, and B can't reach B.

A boxed-in tile: clear the tiles around it first to give it a chance

When you see two kinds of tiles bunched up together, chip away at the tiles around them from the outside, and you won't get stuck there.

5. An open lane in the middle is gold

Once a whole row or column in the middle is cleared, lots of tiles can use that lane for their two turns. So go for the pairs that open up a full lane first. The rest of the game gets smoother and smoother.

6. Save flowers and seasons for when you need them

Any two seasons match, and any two flowers match, so they're more flexible than regular tiles. They're great for rescuing a tricky endgame. No need to clear them all right at the start.

7. Use hints when they really count

Hints in free online Mahjong Connect always show a pair that keeps the board solvable. Save them for when you're truly stuck. Your shared Daily Puzzle result shows how many hints you used, and fewer feels way better. Still learning the rules? Read how to play Mahjong Connect first.

FAQ

Is there a move order that always wins?

Every board is guaranteed to have a solution, but there's no fixed formula. Clear the edges, think in fours and avoid crossed pairs. That's the safest overall approach.

Why am I often left with four tiles I can't clear?

Usually it's a crossed-pair deadlock, with two kinds of tiles blocking each other. The game reshuffles automatically when that happens, and next time you can break up bunched tiles earlier.

How is time counted?

The clock starts when the board appears and stops when you clear the last pair. Hints and undos don't add time, but they're listed in your result.
